The site
Akrotiri is a Bronze Age settlement of the Minoan world, set on a cape on the Greek island of Santorini and occupied across a long span from around 4000 to 1600 BCE. Around 1600 BCE the great eruption that carved Santorini's caldera buried the town under volcanic ash, sealing its multi-storey houses, drains and vivid wall paintings intact — which is why it is often called 'the Minoan Pompeii.' Today the site marks one of the Aegean's most important early urban centres.
