The site
Elefsina, ancient Eleusis, sits on the Thriasio Plain at the northern edge of the Saronic Gulf in Attica, Greece, a settlement occupied from about 1900 BCE to 400 CE. It was the home of the Eleusinian Mysteries, one of antiquity's most celebrated secret rites, and the birthplace of the playwright Aeschylus. Today an industrial city and a European Capital of Culture, it still carries the layers of its long Greek past.
