The site
Epidaurus was a small Greek polis on the Argolid Peninsula beside the Saronic Gulf, celebrated for its sanctuary of Asclepius, god of healing. Its ancient theatre, renowned for exemplary architecture and famous acoustics, drew visitors then as now, and in 1988 both were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The site was pivotal in the spread of healing cults across the Greek and Roman worlds.
