The site
Ancient Corinth was a major Greek city-state set on the narrow isthmus joining the Peloponnese to mainland Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta. Occupied from around 900 BCE, it grew into one of the largest and most important cities of Greece before its fall in 146 BCE, and later flourished again under Rome. Systematic excavations since 1896 have uncovered large parts of the ancient city, whose name is also familiar to Christians from Paul the Apostle's letters to the Corinthians.
