The site
Lake Mungo, in the arid country of New South Wales, Australia, is a burial ground of the Aboriginal Australian people reaching back tens of thousands of years. Among the oldest continuously significant human landscapes on Earth, its dry lakebed has yielded some of the deepest evidence of human presence anywhere. To walk its wind-carved shores is to stand at the very edge of the archaeological record.
