The site

Borobudur is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in Central Java, Indonesia, built of gray andesite-like stone under the Sailendra Dynasty. Nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, rise to a central dome ringed by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupas. Pilgrims climb through corridors carrying 1,460 narrative relief panels, one of the world's most extensive collections of Buddhist reliefs, and roughly 1.4 million visitors come each year.
