The site
Angkor Thom, whose name means "Great City," was the last and most enduring capital of the Khmer Empire, established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII. Enclosed by walls around a nine-square-kilometer area, it holds monuments from earlier eras alongside those Jayavarman and his successors built. At its heart stands the Bayon, Jayavarman's state temple, making the city one of Southeast Asia's major draws.
