The site
Kerma was the capital of the Kingdom of Kerma in present-day Sudan, one of the largest archaeological sites in ancient Nubia. Its urban center grew around a massive adobe temple, the Western Deffufa, and it flourished as a state society between roughly 2550 and 1550 BCE. Decades of excavation have opened thousands of graves and tombs alongside the residential quarters, revealing early copper metallurgy in one of Africa's earliest cities.
