The site
Meroë is an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile in Sudan, north-east of Khartoum, that served for centuries as a capital of the Kingdom of Kush. It is best known for its clustered fields of steep, narrow pyramid tombs rising from the desert edge of the Butana region. Nearby lie the related Meroitic sites of Musawwarat es-Sufra and Naqa, marking this stretch of the Nile as a lasting seat of power.
