The site

Kerkouane is an ancient Punic city in northeastern Tunisia, near Cape Bon, that flourished for nearly four centuries among the great Phoenician towns alongside Carthage. Probably abandoned during the First Punic War around 250 BCE, it was never rebuilt by the Romans, leaving its plan untouched. That accident of history makes Kerkouane the only surviving example of a Phoenician-Punic city, a distinction cited when UNESCO listed it in 1985.
