The site
El Djem is a town in Mahdia Governorate, Tunisia, home to the celebrated Roman Amphitheatre of El Jem. Dating from around 238 CE, the vast arena is the site's defining monument and one of the great surviving amphitheatres of the Roman world. Its ruins recall a provincial North African town wealthy enough to raise a stadium on an imperial scale.
