The site
Jelling, in Denmark northwest of Vejle, is a Viking-Age royal site of burial mounds and stone monuments dating to around 930 CE. Its twin tumuli and standing stones mark it as a major ceremonial centre of the Norse world; its great runestone, raised by King Harald Bluetooth, is often called 'Denmark's birth certificate' for its boast of having won all Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian. The site is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
