The site
Nekhen, known to the Greeks as Hierakonpolis, the City of Falcons, was the religious and political capital of Upper Egypt at the close of the prehistoric era, occupied around 3500 to 3000 BCE. It was the cult centre of the falcon god Horus, whose worship is said to have originated here. Excavations have revealed tombs, temples, breweries, and houses, including the Painted Tomb, the oldest known tomb with painted decoration.
