The site
The Temple of Edfu stands on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, dedicated to the falcon god Horus and one of the best-preserved shrines in the country. Built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 237 and 57 BCE, its walls are covered in inscriptions that illuminate Hellenistic-era language, myth and religion. Among them are building texts and scenes of the sacred drama recounting the ancient conflict between Horus and Seth.
