The site

Göbekli Tepe is a Neolithic sanctuary in Upper Mesopotamia, in modern Turkey, inhabited from around 9500 BCE during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic. It is famous for large circular enclosures of massive stone pillars, among the world's oldest known megaliths, many carved with human details, clothing and reliefs of wild animals. The 15-meter tell offers rare insight into prehistoric religion at the very dawn of permanent human settlement.
