The site
Ek' Balam is a Maya city in the Yucatán of Mexico, occupied from roughly 100 to 1200 CE. Its ceremonial core centres on monumental pyramids, the greatest of which — the Acropolis — shelters an extraordinary stucco frieze of winged figures framing a monster-mouth doorway, among the best-preserved Maya sculpture in the region. As a long-lived centre, Ek' Balam preserves the architecture of a community that endured for more than a thousand years.
