The site
Chichen Itza was a great Maya city on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, a focal point of the northern lowlands from the Late Classic into the early Postclassic. One of the largest Maya cities, it blends architectural styles from the Puuc region and central Mexico across its pyramids, ballcourts, observatory and sacred cenote. Likely remembered in later Mesoamerican lore as one of the mythical great Tollans, this UNESCO World Heritage site may have held the most diverse population in the Maya world.
