The site
Bagan is an ancient city on the plains of Myanmar's Mandalay Region and a World Heritage candidate, capital of the Pagan Kingdom that first unified the lands that would become Myanmar. At its height between the 11th and 13th centuries, more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries rose across the plain. The remains of over 2,200 of them still stand today, a field of brick spires that anchors the country's tourism.
