The site

The palace-city of the Nasrid sultans, raised on the Sabika hill above Granada: a military alcazaba, palaces of carved stucco, cedar ceilings and glazed tile, and the famed courts of the Lions and the Myrtles, where water is used as architecture. It was the seat of the last Muslim dynasty of the Iberian Peninsula and the final stronghold of al-Andalus, surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. Left half-forgotten for centuries, it was rediscovered by Romantic travellers who made it the symbol of a vanished Andalusi world.
