The site

Abydos is one of ancient Egypt's oldest sacred grounds, a necropolis and temple complex on the west bank of the Nile. The site was in use for well over three thousand years, from around 3300 BCE into the early centuries CE, accumulating tombs, sanctuaries, and temples across that immense span. Egyptian builders returned here generation after generation, making Abydos a layered record of the civilization's ritual life.
