The site

The Valley of the Kings is a desert wadi on the west bank of the Nile opposite Luxor, where for nearly 500 years across the Eighteenth to Twentieth Dynasties Egyptians cut royal tombs into the rock. It is known to contain 65 tombs and chambers, from the simple pit of KV54 to the sprawling KV5 with over 120 rooms for the sons of Ramesses II. Decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology, this UNESCO World Heritage Site remains the principal burial ground of the New Kingdom's pharaohs.
