The site

Tōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple of ancient Japan's Nara period, established in the eighth century and largely completed around 800 CE. This great monastic complex, a World Heritage Site, was built as a central sanctuary of Japanese Buddhism. It ranks among the country's most important early temples, a monument to the era when Nara served as the imperial capital.
