The site

Asuka is a village in Japan that lends its name to a formative era of ancient Japanese history, roughly 538 to 710 CE. The surrounding landscape preserves burial mounds, mysterious carved stones and the roots of Japan's first Buddhist temples, from the age when the imperial court and the early state first took shape. Quiet today, it rewards the traveller who reads the countryside as a page from the deep past of the Japanese state.
