The site

Timgad is a Roman colony founded by Emperor Trajan around 100 AD in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria, named to honour his mother, sister, and father. Its ruins are prized as one of the finest surviving examples of the Roman grid plan, a neat orthogonal city laid out on the frontier. Lying about 35 kilometres east of Batna, Timgad was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
