The site

Djemila, the Roman town once called Cuicul, sits in the mountains of northern Algeria and holds some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. Occupied from around 96 to 600 CE, it is celebrated for its striking adaptation of Roman architecture to a steep mountain setting. A theatre, two fora, temples, basilicas and arches survive around the paved forum of the Harsh, earning Djemila UNESCO World Heritage status in 1982.
