The site
Tarquinia, in the Lazio hills of central Italy, guards one of the great Etruscan necropoleis, its burial grounds reaching from the Iron Age Villanovan period around the 9th century BCE into Roman times. Cut into the promontories are painted tombs counted among the most important of the ancient world. Little of the once-flourishing city stands above ground, but excavation keeps drawing its Etruscan and Roman past back into the light.
