The site

Cerveteri is the site of one of the most important Etruscan cities, known to the Romans as Caere and occupied from roughly 900 to 100 BCE. Its most celebrated feature is the Banditaccia Necropolis, a city of the dead whose great tumulus tombs and chambers were cut straight out of the soft tufa rock. Many of these tombs echo Greek architecture, offering a rare window into how the Etruscans lived and buried their own.
