The site

The Roman Forum is the rectangular plaza at the heart of ancient Rome, ringed by the ruins of temples and government halls. Begun as a humble marketplace, it grew into the stage for triumphal processions, elections, public speeches, criminal trials and gladiatorial matches. For centuries this valley between the Palatine and Capitoline hills was the beating nucleus of Roman commercial, legal and civic life.
