Sarmizegetusa Regia was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians before their wars with Rome. Built atop a 1,200-metre mountain in the Orăștie Mountains of Romania, its six citadels formed the core of a strategic defensive system. It should not be confused with the later Roman capital of Dacia built by Trajan some 40 km away.
