The site
Delphi was an ancient Greek sacred precinct set on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus, the seat of the oracle Pythia who was consulted on the great decisions of the classical world. The Greeks believed it marked the very centre of the world, fixed by a stone called the Omphalos, or navel. Its monuments, raised by rival city-states, made it a symbol of Hellenic unity.
