The site

Mycenae is a fortified Mycenaean citadel set on a hill in the north-eastern Peloponnese of Greece, north of Argos. In the second millennium BCE it was one of the great centres of Greek civilization, a military stronghold dominating much of southern Greece and the Aegean. So central was it that the whole era from about 1600 to 1100 BCE is named Mycenaean; at its peak around 1350 BCE its citadel and lower town held some 30,000 people.
