The site

Chogha Zanbil is an ancient Elamite complex in Khuzestan, Iran, one of the few ziggurats to survive outside Mesopotamia. Built in the 13th century BCE, conventionally dated around 1250 BCE, it stands as the best-preserved stepped pyramidal monument of its kind. The city was destroyed in the mid-7th century BCE, and in 1979 Chogha Zanbil became the first Iranian site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
