The site
Biskupin is a fortified village of the European Bronze Age set on the Polish lowlands, its timber ramparts and rows of houses raised on a lake island. Tree-ring dating pins its construction to 738 BCE, and it held life until around 500 BCE. Waterlogged ground preserved the oak defences and street plan with rare completeness, making Biskupin one of the finest windows onto everyday prehistoric settlement in Europe.
