The site
Amarna is the sprawling Egyptian site of Akhetaten, capital city of the late Eighteenth Dynasty built by the pharaoh Akhenaten around 1346 BCE. Laid out on the east bank of the Nile in today's Minya province, it was abandoned shortly after the king's death in 1332 BCE. Though occupied only briefly, the city's ruins capture a singular experiment in Egyptian kingship, its ground later frequented from the Amarna Period into Roman times.
