The site

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel crowning a rocky outcrop above the Greek capital, holding the remains of several buildings of profound architectural importance. Its most celebrated monument is the Parthenon, part of a construction program coordinated by Pericles in the fifth century BCE. Though the hill was inhabited millennia earlier, it is these classical temples, badly damaged in a 1687 siege, that draw millions of visitors each year.
