The site
Seokguram is a Buddhist grotto hermitage on Mount Tohamsan near Gyeongju, built by the court of Unified Silla between 751 and 774 CE and part of the wider Bulguksa complex. The stone sanctuary shelters a seated Buddha widely counted among the finest Buddhist sculptures anywhere. Perched 750 meters above the East Sea, it is famous for the sunrise that visitors climb to watch from beside the Buddha's perch.
