The site

Pergamon was a rich and powerful ancient Greek city in Aeolis, set on a 335-metre andesite mesa northwest of modern Bergama in Turkey. Under the Attalid dynasty in the Hellenistic period it became capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon and one of the great cultural centres of the Greek world. Many monuments still stand, above all the celebrated Pergamon Altar; the city was later counted among the seven churches of Asia named in the Book of Revelation.
