The site
Ostia was the Roman port city at the mouth of the Tiber, occupied over many centuries from around 700 BCE. As Rome's harbour town it grew into a busy commercial hub, and its remains preserve the ordinary fabric of Roman urban life: apartment dwellings, bathhouses, a theatre and the wharves of a working port. The city's ruins offer a rare, grounded picture of how Romans lived and traded.
