Veii was an Etruscan city set on the southern edge of Etruria, just north-northwest of Rome and occupied from around 900 to 396 BCE. It ranked as the richest city of the Etruscan League, alternately at war and in alliance with early Rome for more than three centuries. That long rivalry ended at the Battle of Veii in 396 BCE, when the general Camillus captured the city, which lay thereafter within Rome's orbit.
