Nagarjunakonda is a historical town in Andhra Pradesh, India, now an island after the ruins were rescued from the waters of the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir. Once home to a large Buddhist monastic university, it drew students from as far as China, Gandhara, Bengal, and Sri Lanka. Its sculptures rank among the finest in the distinctive Amaravati style, and its rare secular palace reliefs even show Roman influence.
