The site
Djenné-Djenno is one of the oldest urban settlements in sub-Saharan Africa, a city occupied from around 250 BCE to 1400 CE in the inland delta of Mali. Long a center of trade and craft, its ruins are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands as vivid evidence of an indigenous West African urban tradition reaching back more than two thousand years.
