The site

The Bandiagara Escarpment is a towering sandstone cliff rising some 500 meters above the plains of Dogon country in Mali, stretching roughly 150 kilometers. It is home to the Dogon people, but the cliff face still holds structures built by the earlier Tellem and Toloy peoples. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, this dramatic wall of stone is prized for its archaeological, ethnological, and geological character.
