The site
The Dazu Rock Carvings are a series of religious sculptures cut into the steep hillsides of Chongqing, China, dating as far back as the 7th century CE. Some occupy rock-cut cave shrines while many are open-air reliefs, together numbering some 50,000 statues across 75 protected sites, with over 100,000 characters of inscriptions. Blending Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs, they earned World Heritage status in 1999, their finest works clustered on Mount Baoding and Mount Beishan.
