The site

Cyrene is an ancient Greek city and port on the coast of what is now Libya, founded around 630 BCE. It grew into one of the principal cities of the classical world, occupied for over a millennium until roughly 400 CE. Today its extensive ruins are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a monument to Greek colonial ambition on the North African shore.
