The site
The Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya is a restored Buddhist temple in Bihar, India, marking the spot where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. Beside it grows a tree held to descend from the original Bodhi Tree, drawing pilgrims for over two thousand years. Some elements reach back to the age of Ashoka, though the visible structure dates largely to the 6th century CE. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the holiest place in the Buddhist world.
