The site
Babylon rises from the lower Euphrates in southern Mesopotamia, near modern Hillah in Iraq, the great Babylonian city that served as the cultural and political heart of Akkadian-speaking Babylonia. Its rulers founded two mighty empires here, the Old Babylonian and the later Neo-Babylonian, its ziggurats and city walls anchoring one of the most important urban centres of the ancient Near East. It endured for over two millennia before fading in the Hellenistic age.
