The site

Zhoukoudian, in the Fangshan District southwest of Beijing, is a Palaeolithic cave site whose deposits record human presence across an immense span, roughly 700,000 to 200,000 years ago. As a place of ancient dwelling within the limestone caves, it preserves one of the deepest archives of early human life in East Asia. For the explorer it is a landscape where the story of a single hillside reaches back hundreds of thousands of years.
