The site

Pompeii was a wealthy Roman city near Naples, home to 10,000 to 20,000 people until Mount Vesuvius buried it under meters of ash and pumice in 79 CE. Sealed beneath that blanket, it offers an unmatched snapshot of Roman life: fine public buildings, luxurious frescoed houses, an amphitheatre, baths, and walls covered in everyday graffiti. Decayed organic remains even let archaeologists cast moulds of victims in their final moments.
