The site

Pattadakal is a complex of 7th- and 8th-century Hindu and Jain temples raised by the Chalukya dynasty on the west bank of the Malaprabha River in northern Karnataka, India. What makes this UNESCO World Heritage Site remarkable is its deliberate fusion of northern and southern Indian architectural forms, described as eclectic art at its height. Friezes across the Shiva temples trace stories from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and other sacred texts in carved stone.
