The site

Panjakent is an ancient Sogdian town whose ruins sit on the outskirts of the modern city of the same name, in western Tajikistan on the river Zeravshan. Occupied between roughly 400 and 800 CE, it was once a thriving settlement of Sogdiana. Today the old town's remains overlook the tugay-vegetated floodplain, near the Sarazm bird sanctuary downstream.
